Featured Sunset for 2019

Sunset Inn, Kezar Lake, Center Lovell, Maine

Around 1923, Gustav & Edna Heim (my grandparents) created Sunset Inn & Cottages on the shores of Kezar Lake. Today, Jane Orans owns it as part of Quisisana Resort on an adjacent piece of lakefront land. The present Quisisana represents a harmonious blending of the two resorts.

History

Ralph Burg, a Boston music-store owner bought Quisisana in 1946, added Sunset Inn in 1967, and created the current format of musical staff and nightly shows.

Musical tradition at Quisisana Hotel goes back to 1917 when Spenser & Madaline Strauss established the resort as a haven for musicians and music lovers who played together for their own entertainment.

A Quisisana guest, Gustav Heim, who served as first trumpeter with symphony orchestras in Boston and New York, with his wife, Edna, created Sunset Inn.

Personal

In the early 1940s, I learned to swim in Kezar Lake at Sunset Inn. I swam to the wooden raft and back a zillion times. Cousin Fred (3 days younger) and I had elaborate July birthday cakes made by the Sunset Inn pastry chef. The first 10 years of my life, there were many carefree, fun days at Sunset Inn.

Childhood memories come back to me in the featured December Sunset photo header. I think I’ll keep it up forever. It makes me smile, and I hope your childhood memories make you smile too.  After all it’s in the blog title, Before Sundown, remember what made you smile.

Happy All Seasons to my blog friends and visitors!

Sunrise and sunset seem to be the most perfect part of the day. It’s everything in between – on both ends of it – that get jacked up.

    Great pictures.

I love California, by the way.

Christine, I love those photos. My little camera seems to photograph more sunrises than sunsets and I haven’t decided what to do with them just yet? ๐Ÿ“š Yes, it was strange that I kept looking for the book emoji, but find it, now it shows up? ๐Ÿ“š

  23. Thank you for sharing the sunsets Christine. I’ve always loved that time of the day when the sun is going down, I can’t explain the sometimes unsettling feeling, but it always makes me think of God and how magnificent life can be. Thank you again Christine, I’m looking forward to visiting your site often!
    Cheers,

Stories are important: As teenager it bugged me that my grandmotherโ€™s stories took liberties with facts: now I see she was a great storyteller and embellished for the sake of drama and surprise!
Her name was Karen but she was known as Sissa.
She was neighbor to the greatest Danish Storyteller Isak Dinesen = Karen Blixen ( Out of Africa etc)

    • C.E.Robinson says:

Thank you, Elisabeth. Storytellers do tell tales for drama. Your grandmother would have been a good writer! How interesting to have a famous neighbor. Wonder if they talked writing & books over coffee. Can just imagine! ๐Ÿ“š๐ŸŽถ Christine
